The Reset Foundation Fall Benefit

I was connected with this Bay Area nonprofit through a random decision I made to sign up on Catchafire, a volunteer matching site that connects you to nonprofits like The Reset Foundation based on your skills and the nonprofit's needs. In this case TRF needed and photographer and I needed a great cause to be a part of. It was a match made in nonprofit heaven because I've been lucky enough to be a part of some of their very big moments.

The Reset Foundation is helping to re-imagine the justice system for young adults (ages 18-24) by creating an alternative to prison and focusing on improving their lives through education, counseling, creating new experiences and reentry.  The Reset Foundation creates environments that positively influence the mind sets, habits and core skills of incarcerated adults and work with them to break the cycle. "Designed to cost the same per person as a traditional facility, Reset campuses re-purpose existing government funding to produce outcomes along with exponential cost-savings."

I began photographing their staff for head shots and website photos and then just recently I was asked to photograph their Fall Benefit where they receive pledges to help the foundation live out their vision. The Reset Foundation held their benefit on the top floor of The Fairmont in San Francisco called the Crown Room which provided 360 views of the city and a great ambiance for a night of giving back.

Keenan T. performed a moving poem that touched on how African Americans are treated and viewed. "On this day in a place built by you but not for you...Because the U.S. reads our faces like warning labels....with skin as loud as our voices..."

Co-Founder and CEO Jane Mitchell used to be a teacher in county jails and couldn't let her idea of re-imagining the prison system go. So, in her senior year at Stanford University she began to brainstorm a solution and wrote every idea on Post-its that decorated her dorm room walls.

Seeing pledge cards go up in the air was so moving. Community members who believe in TRF showed their support by pledging amounts like $100, $500, and $10,000!

The same night as the Fall Benefit, The Reset Foundation also found out the results of the Google Impact Challenge that they were in the running for. At this moment they found out that they were awarded a $500,000 grant from Google as a people's choice winner!

I always love working with this inspiring group of people whose visions and stories leave my heart and mind more open than what I walked through the door with. Congratulations guys!
